Thurso is simply magical. It may not be the best known part of the UK Mainland but many of the ‘northernmost’ titles reside here including the Northernmost railway station which is very well looked after. Often seen as a resting point before heading further north to Orkney or Shetland, many people miss the lovely parts of Thurso such as St Peter’s Church and Churchyard (known locally as Old St Peter’s) which are open to the public it’s worth noting that parts of the building date back to the 1100’s quite an achievement considering Thurso’s remote location. To the east of the river are the remains of Thurso Castle which was partly demolished in the 1950’s. One place to make sure you visit is the Museum housed in the old town hall.
