Tongue, Highland, United Kingdom
An historic village, dating back to the bronze age, Tongue is found on the north coast of Sutherland in the Highlands. Bronze Age burial sites, Iron Age brochs and early Christian stones all join with the early Norse influence, which explains the unusual name of this village. ‘Tunga’ is a Norse word to describe the distinctive tongue-shaped piece of land that extends into the water. Castle Varrich, which is near the village is also thought to stem from the Norse occupation of the area.
The village is particularly attractive to those interested in walking, climbing and nature as it lies on the east shore of the Kyle of Tongue, in the shadow of Ben Loyal. Those fascinated by the history of the Highlands, have the 17th Century House of Tongue and the boathouse from the next century said to have been inhabited by the Jacobite prisoners from the ship ‘Hazard’ as they were captured trying to transport Bonny Prince Charlie’s gold to support his rebellion.
An historic village in a beautiful Highland location, with something for everybody.
